Breaking Boundaries in Geoscience: Introducing new LITGEO Program Opportunities for Students
We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the new NSF-sponsored LITGEO project at the Water Resources Center. This program is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at fostering diversity, inclusivity, and community-driven research within the Geoscience community.
We have two opportunities available for students wanting to get involved in this program. One is a post-baccalaureate research position and the other one a fully funded M.S. Program. Before diving more into the details of those programs, let’s see what LITGEO is all about.
What is LITGEO?
LIT GEO stands for “Learning through Intercultural Transformations in Geosciences,” and it represents a paradigm shift in how we approach geoscience research and education. At its core, LITGEO is about amplifying voices, embracing diversity, and empowering individuals from all walks of life to contribute meaningfully to the field of geoscience.
Why does LITGEO Matter?
In the past, certain groups were left out of important discussions in geoscience because their voices weren’t heard. LITGEO is changing that by focusing on research with local communities. We believe their knowledge is important for understanding Earth’s processes. This way, we’re not only including more people but also making sure our research helps solve real-world problems.
Student Involvement Opportunities
As part of the LIT GEO project, you’ll have the chance to engage in community-based research with local organizations while pursuing your Master’s degree. By collaborating with experts from East Carolina University, North Carolina Central University, the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo, and community partners, you’ll play a important role in reshaping the culture of geoscience to be more just, equitable, and inclusive.
