Litter Locator App
The East Carolina University (ECU) Water Resources Center (WRC) was given the opportunity to assist the Environmental Droners, an affiliate of Love A Sea Turtle (LAST), in creating an app for the documentation of litter in our local community. Our collective goals included allowing users to specify the extent, location, and time of litter discovery. Therefore, we decided upon the creation of a Survey123 web app powered by the ESRI ArcGIS Online system. Survey123 is a powerful and convenient tool that allows users to interact with our survey on their smartphone or computer of choice, where the data submitted in each survey response can be easily accessed by our team at the WRC and exported in concise formats.
WRC WaterCorps group members include Jonathan Teboul (WRC WaterCorps project manager), Owen Bergquist (WRC WaterCorps staff member), Makyah Savoy (WRC WaterCorps intern), and Dr. Stephen Moysey (WRC Director) .
LAST Environmental Droners group members include Kean Dao, Sunook Yoon, and David Yoon. They are supervised by Dan Sokolovic, their mentor with Love A Sea Turtle. The Environmental Droners are a group of young environmentally conscious students who wished to increase the scale of their trash cleanup efforts by bringing litter pollution awareness to our broader community. They hope to present data derived from the Survey123 web app to relevant officials at Washington D.C. and inspire greater action toward more effective waste cleanup solutions.
